Most registries have a global access. Thus, Indian Patients through MDR(I) can look for potential
Donors from existing registries outside India also. Unfortunately, such searches are usually not
successful. This is because the likelihood of a match is more within the same racial or ethnic group.
That is why the probability of finding a match for a Patient of Indian origin on the currently
available registries is very bleak. Keeping this in mind Marrow Donor Registry (India) has been set
up. The data will be networked with other registries globally, adding a vast resource from India.
The registry will best serve Patients of Indian ethnicity / origin wherever they are in the world.
It also has the potential to help neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and
Nepal (since we share the same genetic pool) and will help foster friendship and goodwill across
borders.
When a Patient is in need of a transplant and there are no related matches, a search of the Registry
of MDR(I) can be performed to find any possible unrelated matches.
