 Benefits / Deliverables
  • Indian centers are only doing related (sibling Donor) Stem Cell transplants due to non-availability of matched unrelated Donors. Since the probability of a patient of Indian origin finding a match on any of the current international registries is very low, this registry will offer hope in the form of unrelated Stem Cell Donors for Patients who do not have an HLA matched sibling. Even if an Indian Patient finds a match from the international registry the cost of doing a transplant abroad is prohibitive. Once this registry is linked to the international registries, the particular registry where the Donor is located can send the harvested Haematopoietic Stem Cells to the Indian hospital which will perform the transplant on the Patient in India and vice versa.

  • The registry will provide laboratory services free of cost for all potential unrelated Donors enrolled in the registry. The registry will incur an estimated cost of rupees ten thousand per Donor enrolled.
  •
  • Matched Donor search service will also be provided to overseas Patients besides local referrals. It will also be India's contribution to this global effort to make unrelated BMT possible for such Patients. Charges levied to the potential recipient for such a service will be pooled back into the program to make it self-sufficient (will help in recruiting more Donors and the increased Donor pool will further enhance the probability of finding a match).

     Potential
Most registries have a global access. Thus, Indian Patients through MDR(I) can look for potential Donors from existing registries outside India also. Unfortunately, such searches are usually not successful. This is because the likelihood of a match is more within the same racial or ethnic group. That is why the probability of finding a match for a Patient of Indian origin on the currently available registries is very bleak. Keeping this in mind Marrow Donor Registry (India) has been set up. The data will be networked with other registries globally, adding a vast resource from India. The registry will best serve Patients of Indian ethnicity / origin wherever they are in the world. It also has the potential to help neighboring countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal (since we share the same genetic pool) and will help foster friendship and goodwill across borders.

When a Patient is in need of a transplant and there are no related matches, a search of the Registry of MDR(I) can be performed to find any possible unrelated matches.
